When appraisal is the right tool
Appraisal settles one question: the amount of the loss. Most property insurance policies include an appraisal clause for claims where coverage is accepted but the two sides disagree on the scope of repairs, quantities or price.
It is often faster and less expensive than litigation, and either the policyholder or the insurance company can invoke it under most policies.
Who we work with
We serve as the appraiser for policyholders or insurers, serve as umpire, and support everyone working a disputed claim.
- Policyholders
- Your claim is approved, but the payment won't cover the repairs. We can serve as your appraiser.
- Roofing contractors
- A customer's roof claim is stuck on scope or pricing. Have the policyholder call us to see whether appraisal fits.
- Public adjusters
- A negotiated settlement has stalled. Bring us in as the appraiser.
- Attorneys
- Appraiser, umpire, consulting and inspection support for property claims in dispute.
- Insurance carriers
- Licensed, certified appraisers to represent the company in appraisal, and umpires for appraisals in progress.
- Desk adjusters, claims managers and appraisal departments
- Field inspections, estimate reviews and appraisal support when a claim needs to be resolved.
How insurance appraisal works
Written demand
The policyholder or the insurer sends a written demand for appraisal under the policy's appraisal clause.
Each side picks an appraiser
Each side selects a competent, disinterested appraiser, usually within a deadline set by the policy (often 20 days).
The appraisers choose an umpire
The two appraisers select an umpire. If they cannot agree, most policies let either side ask a court to appoint one.
Inspection and negotiation
The appraisers inspect the damage, review the estimates and try to agree on the amount of loss.
The award
If the appraisers agree, they sign an award. Items they cannot agree on go to the umpire, and an award signed by any two of the three sets the amount of loss.

Appraisers and umpires must be competent and disinterested. Ours are licensed, certified and experienced.
